At Home Anywhere

A journey to the 27 countries of the European Union and the 3 candidate countries visiting its inhabitants. Looking for the definition of ‘Home’ at the centre of gravity, the exact hart of each country.

On June 20th we will start the project: At Home Anywhere. This is a project by Esther Kokmeijer and Henrik Jan Haarink in cooperation with Stichting Beeldbeschaving. With this project we want to map the differences and similarities of the concept of ‘home’ within the European Union.

By spending one day and one night at someone’s home, we can record and collect rituals, habits and characteristics. Through a literature study, interviews with residents, analyses, comparisons with the tradition of living and creating a photo report, we will identify what makes people feel at home. In each country we will travel to the village that’s located most centrally within that country,
the village or the city closest to the geographical centre. This place, on average, is the furthest away from the borders. Het Kadaster has calculated the geographical centers of each country specifically for this project.

There will appear a book and a travelling exhibition about the project. At Home Anywhere will start with an exhibition and a midsummernightparty in Het Wilde Weten (www.hetwildeweten.com) in Rotterdam on June 20, 2008 from 17.00 hours.
On June 21 we’ll leave in our campervan to visit the 27 EU countries and the 3 candidate states. The trip will take about one year.

Als Jeroen van Bergeijk in Burkina Faso in een Mercedes-taxi stapt en een vergeelde sticker van voetbalclub PSV op het dashboardkastje ziet, wordt zijn fantasie geprikkeld. Niets aan de auto herinnert nog aan zijn land van herkomst: springveren steken door de stoelen en uit de knalpijp komt een walmende, inktzwarte rook. Hoe is die auto daar terecht gekomen?
Met die vraag in het achterhoofd reist Van Bergeijk een jaar later met een oude Mercedes Diesel van Amsterdam naar West-Afrika. Hij doorkruist Marokko, de woestijn van Mauritanië en belandt via Mali, Ghana, Togo en Benin uiteindelijk in Ouagadougou. Hij krijgt autopech – uiteraard! – en maakt de nasleep van een staatsgreep mee in Togo. Onderweg gaat hij op zoek naar de handelaren en avonturiers die in oude auto’s door de Sahara rijden om ze in Afrika met winst te verkopen.
